The thought process behind the R3 suspension was not only to improve handling and ride quality, but also to make a kit that’s very easy to purchase and, more importantly, to install. It is an all-inclusive kit containing not only the obvious suspension components, but also the rear end, brakes, engine and transmission mounts.
Since most suspension customers are not suspension engineers, R3 has removed the guesswork from the buying process. Customers are queried as to which engine and transmission they have, and the company supplies the suspension with the proper motor and transmission mounts, as well as with the correct spring and damper rates for the weight of the vehicle and its intended usage. Wilwood 12-inch rotors and 4-piston calipers are standard, but larger options are possible. There are two preload and dual-rate spring options available. Currently the kit comes with coil-over shocks adjustable for compression and rebound damping.
R3’s kits are simple to purchase and easy to install. In fact, they are a bolt-on affair. There is some cutting involved—largely to remove the standard shock towers at the front. With the towers gone, there is more freedom of engine choice—even the powerful Coyote engine can be installed without firewall modification. In lieu of shock towers, the kit comes with its own upper shock-mount structure that bolts directly to the frame.
R3’s kit designers started completely from scratch—cutting metal, fabricating and installing parts. They watched how the parts cycled and how clearances were affected, and they made adjustments and refinements. The process also involved a lot of test drives! In the end, the company has come up with a complete front and rear coil-over suspension package that provides both superior handling and a supple ride, and with zero bump-steer.
